On March 9th, in honour of International Women’s Day 2019, the Toronto Church of Christ Women’s Ministry hosted She Can. Believe. Be Brave. Become. The event aimed to empower women of all ages to be who they were created to be and make their mark on the world. The buzz was palpable in the room as over 650 women gathered together to celebrate, learn, network and encourage. Coming on the heels of prayer and fasting for women’s issues globally, our spirits shone bright with common purpose and intention in sharing the gospel and dreaming of a day when women everywhere could know the unique freedom and love found in Christ.
We invited friends and family, and many drove far distances to attend this very special day. One woman who attended came because she had been sitting at a
coffee shop that morning and searched “women’s empowerment” online and ‘She Can’ by the Toronto Church of Christ came up in her search browser. She was moved to attend and was so impacted by the event that she came to church the next day. When women believe, amazing things can happen!
We were encouraged to be brave as each speaker drew tangible lessons pulled from the stories of Sarah, Deborah and Anna, respectively. We were implored to have faith in God’s promises – even when it seems physically impossible. We were inspired to let God lead as we make faith a priority. We were motivated to be confident that God wants to co-create with us, that our lives are not designed solely by God, but that he wants to include us in the design process. Amazing things are possible when women work with God co-creating together.
How we become was highlighted as our panelists, who spanned generations, shared how vital the support of one another is, not only from our peer group but all ages and stages as we navigate the ins and outs of being a young woman, wife, mother, single professional, widow or grandmother. We must draw on the wisdom of women who have gone before; we use their learning, personal experiences and stories as pillars in our becoming, gleaning wisdom and knowing that God is at work in our lives and hearts all the time, and that He is always creating us to become who he intends us to be. Becoming isn’t a one-time thing, it’s a life-long process that we share with other women.
The event was surrounded by voices in spoken word, dance, song and video message for the youth to call on their courage. As we enter the future full of faith ignited with a collective vision to be all we are created to be, we are encouraged by this hope and future God that has purposed for us. Let’s encourage each other to believe, be brave and become who we are meant to be. #SheCan #BetterForGod
